"Amid the pandemic, I was concerned about the challenges faced by architecture students worldwide, and I felt somewhat helpless as I wasn't a key worker. Witnessing their struggles during these uncertain times, in March 2020 I initiated Complimentary Virtual Mentoring Sessions, which progressed with the assistance of four others until October 2022; remote aspect of the pandemic presenting unique challenges.
Balancing the demands of my full-time work and undergraduate teaching while managing Sessions required careful time management. I addressed this by utilising advanced calendar management tools and early video-calling systems. Recognising the need for a more personalised and community focused approach, we expanded our local efforts.
The transition from virtual to in-person Sessions in November 2022 marked a significant shift, particularly in terms of scale, establishing a physical location, and effectively managing the busy schedules of our mentors. Our expanded team, comprising 16 talented young professionals with diverse experiences from various UK universities, played a pivotal role in facilitating design reviews and workshops. Sessions now takes place at HFM Architects' office space, creating a supportive environment for our mentoring activities.
Our current focus revolves around effective student engagement, addressing their diverse questions and needs, and fostering an open community space. To maximise the benefit of these interactions, we conduct thorough preparatory work, playing a crucial role in ensuring that students have the best possible experience during their sessions. Additionally, we recognise the importance of addressing the well-being issues that some of our mentees face. Drawing from my learnings from safeguarding and mental health training received through Arts Emergency, I have incorporated these principles into our mentorship approach, providing signposting support where needed."
An ongoing independent research study aiming to promote Architecture as a career path for students from age 16+ establishments across the Boroughs of London. Through investigation of areas identified by high percentages of Global Majority Ethnicity pupils, this study looks to implement mentorship initiatives, with the overarching goal of improving diversity within the profession.
The ‘Sessions School’ primarily aims to provide disadvantaged young people with a platform to express their creativity and spark interest in their environment. The programme supports mentees to develop better communication skills by encouraging them to engage and express themselves in ways they might not have considered possible.
We look to shape the path for 14 to 18 year olds from primarily underrepresented backgrounds into architecture and its associated disciplines, guiding their exploration and understanding of the field through professional careers insight, hands-on workshops & presentations, and a short-form design brief.
